Butoh (jap. , butō, ursprünglich ankoku butō = „Tanz der Finsternis“ oder "Schattentanz") ist ein Tanz- theater ohne feste Form.

Butoh ist ein Tanztheater von meditativer Zartheit bis zur exzessiven G ROTESKE . Es bedient sich zwar unterschiedlicher Tanz- und Ausdrucks- formen, wie z. B. des N Ō , Flamenco oder Capoeira , jedoch erst der ganze Tänzer mit seiner Seele, seinen Träumen, seinen Erinnerungen und seinem Körper entwickelt die Tanz- technik. Die Vorstellungskraft des Tänzers spielt dabei eine wesentliche Rolle, sein Körper wird von seinen I MAGINATIONEN bewegt und geführt – und entführt uns mit seinen Energien ins L ABYRINTH DER EIGENEN S EEL e.

Butô entstand Ende der 60er Jahre auf dem Höhepunkt der ANTIAMERIKANISCHEN Protestwelle in Japan. Ein Tanz der Revolte‘ gegen die Amerikanisierung der japanischen Kultur durch Musicals und Music Halls. Gleichzeitig lehnt er sich auch gegen die starre TECHNISCHE K ODIFIZIERUNG im klassischen japani- schen Tanz auf und sucht neue Traditionen im deutschen Ausdruckstanz, bei S CHAMANENPRAKTIKEN und modernen Tanztechniken. Butô schafft aus der Verbindung von NO, Kabuki und westlichem Tanztheater eine eigene, K ETZERISCHE V ERARBEITUNG japanischer Traditionen.“
